I’m a freelance marine designer and these are my own choices:
1. For small boat design, including concept development, I use Blender and 3D Boat Design (has a full library of pre-made boat parts)
2. For complex boat design, I usually use Solidworks, AutoCAD or Rhino (great for free flowing shapes and complex hydro-mechanical modeling)
If you want something user-friendly & cheap but professionally competent, get 3D boat design. It lets you design complex shapes from a single surface and also runs real-world simulations.
