In frederick douglas- did Frederick escape slavery by boat?- i think he did, or was it his plan?



Douglass tried escaping three times. The third time was the charm. This time he boarded a train dressed as a sailor, one of the few occupations a free blackman could have. He then crossed a river via a ferry and took another train to Wilmington, Delaware. From there he boarded a steamboat and sailed up the Delaware river to Phily before moving on to NYC.

    We don’t know. Fredrerick Douglas said he could not specify the details of his escapes because it would have been easier for slave catchers to capture him.

    On September 3,1838, Douglass boarded a train dressed as a sailor with false papers he got off the train in Wilmington, Delaware, and took a steamboat from there to Philadelphia, and then onto New York City. It took him a total of 24 hours to travel to NYC.
