iam building a small boat and whaat i want to do is use a 5 hp briggs and stration engine and hook a shaft to?
i will add a rudder for steering.
two things,
1. without a reduction gearbox, the prop will be spinning at whatever RPM the motor is spinning at. No torque whatsoever. Too much of a load, the engine won’t run.
2. You’ll have a very awkward angle of attack. the prop will be pushing the stern up, which makes the bow dig in. the boat will fill with water.

are you planing on having it be an inboard? if you do its gunna be a pain and the ass because you will need to find a seal out of a ski boat or something that will fit the shaft(to stop water from running in through the bottom of the boat, and find a prop to fit to the shaft and a way to connect the prop to the shaft ,also the boat will be constently moving when idileing. im sure you can make it work….. but after many hours of hard labor and finding the rite parts that will fit. best way to do it wud be to go look at a ski boat and try and mimik the set up … gud luck…..additional info;also i would use a small prop , an make a lever to control the rpm of moter.could make with a few springs and a brake cable if u think it out

good luck on your project.
here is a video of a couple of old salts who mated a lawnmower engine to an old outboard lower unit to power their salvaged boat.

if you search for "lawnmower boat" you will find more info
hope this helps

Just build a longtail. Simple, very effective, no through hull fittings.

Definitely see the video from the link- it will give you a real idea. Particularly the noise level you can expect.
