Don’t let anyone with a negative attitude talk you out of it… If indeed it is something you really want to do. As you can do this… Hey, we all had to start somewhere…
I suggest you visit the link below. It has hundreds of boat plans you can build. Certainly, some of them are much easier to build then others, and yes, some take a few days to build, while others will take a few years to build.
If your dream is to build a sailboat that will get you to Guyana – that is a very (relative easy) task. Boat build using today’s high-tech boat resins (epoxy) is not rocket science. A good set of boat plans, a place to build it, a few good common handyman tools, and the ability to follow directions… with a BOAT LOAD OF FORTITUDE AND DETERMINATION is all you really need.
My suggestion to get started is this… visit the website below… pick the smallest, most simple to sail and simple to build (blue water) sailboat you can find, that fits into your comfort level, philosophy and pocket book.
Then, find a "dinghy" that you can power and sail (as you will need one) that will fit on and work with the sailboat you eventually want to build. Buy the plans for the dinghy and build it first. This will cost you a minimum of money, time, and effort – but it will teach you much…
Not only will building the dinghy give you a near perfect vision of what’s ahead when you build your bigger sailboat – in regards to time it will take, materials and tools, etc. You will get all the OJT (on job training) building a vessel that you can easily correct mistakes with, and understand better how you would do it different…
At any rate, the link below has several pages you can learn from… it is a great site for beginners and experts alike. You can buy "STUDY PLANS" for about $10.00 US which come with a complete BOM (Bill of Materials) so you can know (and price) out what your vessel will cost ahead of buying the full set of plans, or building it.
