I need to build a boat that can float and can hold a person that weighs 125 lbs. using only the supplies listed: 10 pieces of 1"x8′ plywood, wood glue, large pieces of construction paper, and water resistant paint. Has anyone ever done this before, or does anyone have any good ideas? It cannot be a raft, it must be a boat and the person must be able to row themselves across a pool without sinking.

Oh Goodness… we did this back in the mid 70’s… there is a Boy-Scout canoe/kayak design but I don’t have the drawings !!

The difference: we also had canvas and staples. It basically took 3 pieces of 1′x8′ plywood to make the bottom with 4 inch strips running along the joints… they were glued, stapled, and covered with canvas.

The top was built the same way, but with a whole cut in the center to allow the boater to sit.

The two parts were joined with canvas, and they spread apart with two "bulkwarks"

I wish I could explain better !! I’ll post and search for the drawings.

EDIT: Here is a link to the kayak I was describing: http://www.kayak2go.com/

Here is another example: http://www.glen-l.com/designs/canu-row/kidyak.html

GOOD LUCK

I’m looking for something that’s easy to use and quick to plan & construct.

You can use 3D Boat Design to design the structure of your power boat and its internal mechanics. It also runs simulations in real time so that you can test it digitally before building.

Pre-built plans (that you can customize) are a part of the full system. It’s a good time saver while brainstorming boat concepts.

I’m trying to learn about the "Secret" government project which took place in the 40s off the coast of Florida. A boat, with a full crew, was electrified with an extremely high current, and many odd things happened to the sailors. Some disappeared, some were found as if they had sunk halfway into the floor, some were found miles away. What was the name of this project?

Are you thinking of "The Philadelphia Experiment" ? This is a rumored project that has been around for many years, and a movie loosely based on a fictional book based on these rumors came out just over 20 years ago.

Check the website below, or web search "The Philadelphia Experiment" for more info.

Im a noob camper/fisher and so far i have two trips im planning, but im unsure of what time of year to plan them (early spring, mid summer, late fall, ect…). The first trip is to Lake Grapvine in North Texas, a few friends and i want to rent a boat and fish and possibly swim a little. The second trip is a camping trip to Turner Falls in Oklahoma, where we plan to stay 3 day 2 nights, and want to swim and hike, and maybe fish. We will be taking my friends 4 year old, so we dont want it to be to rainy or cold, but i dont really want to go when its real crouded and/or when there is gunna be a lot of drinking ( like the 4th of july).

well i like to go out in the fall because it is not quite cold yet but its nice if you go in the spring it will rain a lot and the water levels will be to high the swim

I am looking for information about building a boat out of fiberglass. A former co-worker told me that I may be able to build a frame, cover it in chicken wire, then news paper / kraft paper, and then fiberglass. The idea is that the frame supports the chicken wire, which supports the news paper / kraft paper, which in turn prevents the fiberglass from drippig through the chicken wire. It sounds nutty, but feasible to me. Does anyone know weather or not I should this? How would you build a light weight fiberglass boat? Thanks for your input, have a great day!

You can build different ways , but your suggestion don’t’ do it …. I have extensive experience with fiber glass , that said … here are some suggestions: , one the easiest , make a female mold of your boat out of 1/2 inch medite boards , so in effect is a one time mold , you make the ribs on the out side and line it so you end up with a female mold , then clean it up and lay in side of it about 5 coats of separation wax , polish it and your last coat separation compound for molds , then spray or roll in side your white or colored jell coat , let it harden up and begin the proses of laying down about 4 layers of fiber glass mat and roving impregnated with the resin , then with glassing foam create ribs and floor members at intervals of 2′ , this for up to 30′ of boat , you have to at least have some plans for details and spacings of bulk heads . Once you have finished the glassing dismantle the out side framing that goes in the garbage , and the you have to do some polishing of the smooth out side , remember to be very clean in the construction of the female mold , the smoothest finish in the inside the easier to separate the two parts , but with the sheets of medite they brake up easy , good luck .
