I’ve wanted to build my own boat for a long time now. I’ve read some books on how to do it and I think I can the only thing that i’ve never been able to find is can you build a boat and legally drive it in the ocean? I currently have my own sail boat and that has to be registered and I have insurance I just don’t know if that’s something I need to have or not. But could I build a boat and some how get a VIN number for it or something or would building my own boat be a waste of time because I wouldn’t be able to use it …. assuming it floated when I put it in the water lol. I live in california any one know how to register a hand made boat?

Build your boat. Go to the DMV when it is finished and apply for registration. In CA all boats require a registration card, proof of insurance, and a hull number with a valid sticker affixed.
Just fill out the form and indicate "home built" in the Manufacturers section. They may require a visual inspection of the boat, but when I built mine it was not required.

Try 3D Boat Design. It has a fantastic set of digital boat parts that are regularly updated.

Of course, the software itself is flexible to create new parts of your own. It’s a powerful alternative to AutoCAD as far as designing boats is concerned.

The boat must float and hold 5 marbles. We can use most anything to make the boat, but it must be homemade. Am worried that if the marbles (added at school right before float time) are not stationary they may shift weight too much and capsize boat. Any suggestions? Thanks.

If you use glue, be sure to use a hot glue gun and not Elmer’s.

some thing out of plywood and such . would be nice if anyone out there has done one and can tell me how it went .

It depends what kind of boat you want to build but if you go to the website for Glen-L boats, they have quite a selection and their plans are very good. I built a stiletto a number of years ago and it went really smoothly. I think the plans cost about $20.00. eBay has always got listings for plans on CD for $6 as well but I have no experience with them. The Glen-L plans were great.

is there any website with instructions?either timber or fibre glass.imagine how it would feel to launch a boat you built yourself,i would love it.

I have been refurbishing and building boats for years and the most informative site I have found for the DIYer is Iboats.com.
Glen L has tons of great plans but without the fundamental know how they wont do you much good.
Iboats.com has great forums covering every aspect of construction and repair with tons of answers coming from amazingly knowledgeable people.

e-mail from W.L. . . .
I think these are great and ideal for emergency teams.
I would be interested in procuring a couple of these for our
local emergency scuba team.
- Rescue instructor Program director – in reply to: Mr. W. L.; -
No, the emergency water crafts are not yet available . . .
Commandant Heinz, a chief officer of the U.S.C.G. evaluated other videos from the viewpoint of a
craft being used within open seas or basically in the middle of the ocean, and where that is
his job to have that perspective. He did like one of our versions, but hesitated to perceive the
craft being used as an open ocean environment rescue craft; and ultimately suggested the
craft remain as a recreational craft without further and first hand examination.
All water crafts, and especially an emergency water craft must begin with the U.S.C.G. testing
and rating their weight limits.
We do envision the craft meeting U.S.C.G. requirements as an inner coastal emergency water craft…
Myself and my two sons weigh about 450 pounds total. All three of us have
stood up within one version, and rocked it violently from side to side without going overboard.
Within the “no-parts”version, and other units which did not have elastic cords; we have
pushed all 4 sidewalls outward and downward to within 1 inch of the water’s surface without capsizing.
Envision dozens of the folded units being stacked on a single pallet for
storage or retail sales display, and where the end consumer unfolds the unit to
tear off or cut off the flat folding oars to insert within the sidewalls of the fully assembled water craft; and all without using any tools or parts, other than
possibly needing a pocket knife. ( The material is much tougher than it looks, and so does not tear away as easily as we thought it would in its perforated
attachment to the flat unfolded structure.) But my personal goal is to see an emergency craft with an attached means of propulsion which does not require any other
part or tool (pocket knife); and so, we are still working on that
particular concept of a pallet stacked with “no-parts” water crafts with their attached means of propulsion; ( the flat folding oars ).
In the video which shows 4 units with means of propulsion being deployed from a 5th water craft, you will hear chuckles of amazement as our camera person
and others on shore view the 4 emergency water crafts being deployed within 55 seconds. The most amazing part of that video is that any of the 4 units will stack
within any of the others.
Summarily, we are still waiting for an investor to literally take charge and
financially delegate the proper course. We have communicated with Mr. Warren Buffett’s personal secretary (palms-down) and with the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation (also palms-down) to take any portion of the concept and run with it anywhere in the world; excluding the U.S. market. Both parties were gracious and
polite in their response to us; and where they were extremely busy in their own particular fields of philanthropy. I highly respect their efforts;
as in 2007, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation ( which includes Mr. Buffett as one of its founders ) were ranked as the second most generous philanthropists in
America.
And so… according to the 1 to 6 persons conversation rule, an investor should find us soon, and you should have full access to the emergency water crafts by spring of 2010.
– thank you, and congratulations on your ability to envision potential . . .
