In High school physics, we have a project where in groups of 6 people, we build a boat using whatever we want. We have a month to build a boat that can carry two people and can race against other boats from a different school. Is it better to build a cardboat boat or a plywood boat? Where should we start? Please help and give ideas..

First decide how big to make it. By Archimedes principle, it will have to displace an amount of water equal to the weight of the boat plus the two passengers.

The depth of the boat needs to be less than the depth of the water, of course!

You probably need to make a frame, for strength, and then cover it with something waterproof. A box shape (vertical sides and flat bottom) is probably easier than a traditional boat shape with a keel.

You could use (thick) plastic sheet as a covering material instead of plywood.

Think about stability – see the reference. The passengers will probably need to sit or kneel, so you need enough space so they can do that.

To race, the passengers need to be able to row or paddle, and also steer.

Good luck!

Me and my friend brianne are in a science fair for which boat will hold the most weight. The weight is metal washers. Me and my friend are hoping to get some awsome answers from peeps, plus were trying to get 1st. So please give us your best answers and ideas.

A flat bottom design will give you the best load capability, think of how a barge is designed. Very wide fairly deep and pretty long. distribute your weight evenly across the entire flat deck and you will win!!!!!!

my teacher gave a class project for making a boat. it should be made from unused things and if you want to buy some of the parts it should be less than $5 of total. every boat made wil be entered into school contest. so, what parameters should I make to build a perfect boat for the class project?
oh yeah! great suggestions so far, hard to decide… by the way, it will be a model boat but I think a suggestion for life size boat will be useful too. thanks for the advice, i will extend the question period

When a boat designer draws plans for a boat, the first thing that is done is to build a "Model Boat" from the plans. So, any boat plans can be made into a small model.
One answer mentions Popsicle Sticks. This would make for good frames and use a Shoebox (Not corrugated cardboard, but, the thin shoebox type) or maybe a flat plastic. This material will bend easy. Use the Popsicle Sticks for supports across the boat and for seats. In the link you will find a simple Row Boat, scroll down;

Row Boats the Jolly Roger 8′
You can almost look at the picture and build this. Just use a ruler and make 1 inch equal to 1 foot. This an 8′ boat so your model will be 8". If you can lay Popsicle sticks side by side and glue with Elmer’s Glue or what ever then this give you the bottom. After the glue dry make your curves for the shape. You may need help to cut this, or maybe get the Wood Shop teacher to cut it out for you on a Band-saw. Depends on your time frame. Then you clue your cardboard, cut to size to the bottom and make seats across to help hold the shape. Cut small pieces of your sticks to glue to the side just high enough to lay the seat board across. Hope you understand and good luck. Heck, you make even use a drinking straw and some cloth/cardboard and put a little sail on your boat. Other pictures on the web-site help you get the idea.

I have the sudden urge to "throw" together a model boat hull. I know what I’m looking for. I’m looking to make one about 12" long, probably of speedboat style. Bulkhead and planking construction. If I get that far I might cover the hull in glass cloth and deck. I don’t think I’ll actually get as far as installing a power unit.
So far google hasn’t brought up a happy answer.

Try the plans section in Model Boats.

I am looking for a gift for a friend who has just started work as a boat builder. Can anyone advise me on the best Chisels to buy as they need to be durable and easy to use in all types of weather.

This is going to depend on just how ‘good’ a friend you are,so if someone handed me a set,or even a couple of Lee Nielson socket shank chisels,I would be speechless with thanks.Made the old fashioned way and made to last several lifetimes, beautiful, but ye god’s they cost big time,if only I could talk myself into them.Your friends only problem then will be stopping them getting stolen.and the envy of his master.
